The Yamaha XT 500 motorcycle was produced in 1977 with a capacity of 499 cc and a four-stroke, single-cylinder, SOHC, two-valve engine. It had a compression ratio of 9.0:1 and was equipped with a 32mm Mikuni VM32SS carburetor and magneto, CB/coil ignition. The bike had a maximum power of 32 hp at 6500 rpm and a maximum torque of 4.0 kgf-m at 5500 rpm. The transmission was a five-speed with a wet multi-plate clutch and a final drive chain. The bike had a half-duplex cradle frame and a front suspension of a leading axle coil spring fork with a front wheel travel of 195 mm. The rear suspension was a swing arm adjustable preload with a rear wheel travel of 142 mm. The front brake was a single 160mm drum and the rear brake was a single 150mm drum. The dimensions of the bike were 2185 mm in length, 875 mm in width, and 1165 mm in height with a wheelbase of 1415 mm and a ground clearance of 215 mm. The dry weight of the bike was 140 kg and it had a fuel capacity of 8.8 litres. The average fuel consumption was 59 mpg and it could reach a top speed of 162.2 km/h. Road tests were conducted by Bike magazine in 1977, Motorcycling Monthly in 1976, and Moto Journal in 1982, among others.
