The Yamaha TDR 250 was a two-stroke, parallel twin cylinder motorcycle with a 249 cc capacity and a compression ratio of 5.9:1. Its autolube lubrication system was fed by 2x 28mm TM28SS Mikuni carburetors, and it had a transistorized ignition and kick start. The bike had a maximum power output of 46 hp at 10000 rpm and a maximum torque of 3.7 kgf-m at 8500 rpm. The TDR 250 had a six-speed transmission and chain final drive, with air-assisted telescopic forks and a single shock rising rate adjustable preload on the front and rear suspension, respectively. The front and rear brakes were single-disc, with 2 piston calipers on the front and a single piston caliper on the rear. The bike had a seat height of 820 mm, a ground clearance of 230 mm, and weighed 137 kg dry and 153 kg wet, with a 14-liter fuel capacity. The TDR 250 had a top speed of 175 km/h and could accelerate from standing to 1/4 mile in 13.6 seconds at a speed of 152.8 km/h.
