BMW K 1200 RS (1999-00)
The BMW K 1200 RS was a sport touring motorcycle produced by the German manufacturer between 1999 and 2000. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 1,171 cc engine that produced 130 hp and 86 lb-ft of torque. The engine was mounted longitudinally and had a five-speed gearbox and shaft drive to the rear wheel. The motorcycle’s exhaust system was mounted under the seat to keep the center of gravity low. The K 1200 RS had a fuel capacity of 5.5 gallons and weighed 570 lbs.
The motorcycle was equipped with ABS brakes, which were rare at the time. It also had a partially integrated braking system that allowed the rider to use the front and rear brakes at the same time. Other features included an adjustable windshield and rider seat, a dual headlight system, and a large, easily readable dashboard. The K 1200 RS was considered a comfortable long-distance touring bike, but its sporty handling made it suitable for twisty roads as well.
One of the downsides of the bike was its weight and size, which made slow-speed maneuvering difficult. Some owners also reported issues with the engine’s cooling system, causing overheating at low speeds. The bike’s high price tag was also a deterrent for some prospective buyers.
Overall, the BMW K 1200 RS was a capable touring bike that offered a balance of comfort and sportiness. Its advanced features and technology made it ahead of its time, but its weight and price were barriers for some riders.
