The Kawasaki ZX-R 400 motorcycle was released in 1990 and features a four-stroke, transverse four-cylinder, DOHC engine with a capacity of 399cc/24.3 cu-in. It has a compression ratio of 12.0:1 and uses 4x Keihin CVKD30 carburetors for induction. The ignition system is transistorized and the bike has an electric starter. It can produce a maximum power of 59hp @12,000 rpm and a torque of 40 Nm @10,000 rpm. The clutch is wet multi-disc and the transmission is 6-speed with a final drive of a chain. The frame is an aluminum diamond tubular, double cradle with 41mm upside-down Showa forks at the front and Uni-Trek adjustable preload with rebound damping at the rear suspension. The front brakes of the bike have 2x 300mm discs with a 4-piston caliper while the rear brake has a single 240mm disc with a 2-piston caliper. The bike has a wheelbase of 1395mm/54.9in and weighs 160 kg/352.7 lbs (dry) and 177 kg/390 lbs (wet). The fuel capacity of the bike is 16 liters/4.2 US gallons and the average consumption is 18.7 km/lit. When tested, the bike’s braking from 60-0 took 12.5m while 100-0 took 36.9m. Its standing 1/4 mile record is 12.2 sec while its maximum speed was clocked at 215.1 km/h or 133.5 mph. The Kawasaki ZX-R 400 received positive road test reviews from Motosprint in both 1990 and 1991.
