The Kawasaki KLX 250R was a hand-built dirt bike manufactured from 1997 to 1999. Equipped with a four-stroke, single-cylinder, 249 cc engine and a Keihin CVK34 carburetor, the motorcycle boasted a maximum power output of 27 hp at 8500 rpm and a maximum torque of 2.6 kgf-m at 7500 rpm. The bike had a six-speed transmission and chain final drive, and it weighed in at 116 kg dry and 130 kg wet. With a 10-litre fuel capacity and a top speed of 139.0 km/h, the KLX 250R featured a steel double-cradle frame and a front suspension of 43 USD cartridge fork with 16-way adjustable compression damping, as well as a rear suspension of Bottom-Link UNI-TRAK with gas-charged shock, adjustable preload, 16-way rebound and compression damping. The front and rear brakes on the bike were single-disc, and its front and rear tires were 3.00-21 and 4.00-17, respectively. The KLX 250R was known for its quick acceleration and nimble handling, making it popular among off-road enthusiasts.
