The Kawasaki KLX 650 was a four-stroke, single-cylinder, DOHC, 4-valve motorcycle produced in 1993-94. It had a liquid-cooled engine with a capacity of 651cc and a compression ratio of 9.5:1. The bike used a single 40mm Keihin CV carburetor for induction and had a CDI ignition with a kick-start. The KLX 650 had a maximum power output of 48 hp at 6,500 rpm and a torque of 5.3 kgf-m at 5,500 rpm. The transmission was a 5-speed, and the final drive was through a chain.
The bike weighed 145 kg dry or 153 kg wet, had a fuel capacity of 12 liters, and an average fuel consumption of 19 km/L. The front and rear suspensions were both made by Kayaba, with the front fork being upside-down and the rear shock a single unit. The front and rear brakes were both single-disc, and the front and rear tires were sized 90/90-21 and 130/80-17, respectively. The seat height was 885mm, and the bike had a top speed of 161.2 km/h or 101 mph. In a road test by Tuttomoto in 1995, the KLX 650 covered the standing quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds at 148.3 km/h, with a braking distance of 14.1 meters from 60-0 km/h or 42.03 meters from 100-0 km/h.
