The BMW R50 US motorcycle was produced from 1967 to 1969 in limited numbers exclusively for the US market. It was built with a 500cc engine that had a unique configuration, with the cylinders inclined towards each other at a 72-degree angle. This design allowed for better cooling and a more compact engine, which made the motorcycle suitable for touring.
The R50 US had several distinctive features, such as the telescopic forks with rubber gaiters and the Earles-type front fork. The bike also had a larger fuel tank, widened handlebars, and a beefier rear fender compared to its European counterparts.
The R50 US was only available in a single color, a bright Dover White with black pinstriping. The motorcycle’s speedometer was marked in miles per hour, and it was fitted with large and comfortable seats, different from the European version. The bike’s engine was rated at 30 horsepower, and it had a top speed of 90 mph, which was adequate for touring but not for racing.
Today, the BMW R50 US is a sought-after motorcycle among collectors, and its limited production makes it a rare find. Despite that, it remains an impressive piece of machinery with its unique engine design and striking appearance. If you’re lucky enough to own one, you can take pride in having a piece of BMW’s history.
