BMW R39 (1925-27)

The BMW R39 was a motorcycle produced from 1925 to 1927 by the BMW company in Germany. It was the first motorcycle produced entirely by BMW, following the company’s takeover of the German Eisenach car factory in 1925.

The R39 had a 250cc single-cylinder engine with a top speed of around 60 km/h (37 mph). It was designed for reliable and comfortable touring, rather than high-speed racing. Its frame was made of steel tubes, and it had front and rear suspension for a smoother ride.

The R39 was also notable for its advanced technology, including a three-speed gearbox, a kickstarter, and a dry sump lubrication system. It was also one of the first BMW motorcycles to feature a shaft drive, which reduced maintenance needs and provided a smoother ride compared to chain drives.

Despite its technological advancements and comfortable touring design, the R39 didn’t sell well due to its high price and the economic difficulties of the time. Only around 750 R39 motorcycles were produced, making it a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item today.

The R39 paved the way for BMW’s later success in motorcycle production, with advanced designs and technologies becoming a hallmark of the brand’s motorcycles. Today, BMW motorcycles continue to be highly regarded for their performance, reliability, and innovative features.
