BMW R16 (1929-34)

The BMW R16 was a motorcycle produced by BMW from 1929 to 1934. It was part of BMW’s R series of motorcycles and was the first motorcycle produced by the company with a telescopic fork suspension system, which provided a smoother ride compared to the previous models. The R16 was also equipped with BMW’s first flat-twin engine, which was more powerful than the single-cylinder engines used in earlier models.

The R16 had a top speed of around 80 km/h (50 mph) and was designed for long-distance touring. It had a comfortable, upright riding position and a large fuel tank that could hold up to 17 liters (4.5 gallons). The motorcycle was also equipped with a range of advanced features for its time, including a center stand and a foot-operated gear shift.

Despite its advanced features, the R16 was not a commercial success. Its high price and competition from other manufacturers, such as Harley-Davidson and Indian, made it difficult for BMW to sell the motorcycle in large numbers. In total, only about 1,000 R16s were produced.

Today, the BMW R16 is considered a rare and highly collectible motorcycle. It is prized by collectors for its advanced design, historical significance, and engineering quality. Restored R16s can fetch prices of over $100,000 at auction, making them one of the most valuable motorcycles in the world.
