The Yamaha XS 650 (XS-2) motorcycle was produced in 1972 and featured a four-stroke, parallel twin-cylinder engine with a capacity of 653 cc. The engine had a compression ratio of 8.4:1 and was cooled by air with wet sump lubrication. It had 2 valve per cylinder, with a bore x stroke of 75 x 74 mm. Induction was done through 2 Mikuni BS38 carburettors and it was ignited by battery and induction coil. Starting was through kick.
