The Suzuki RF 400R was produced from 1997 to 1998 and had a four-stroke, transverse 398 cc, 4-cylinder, DOHC engine with 4 valves per cylinder. It had a liquid-cooled cooling system, Mikuni 32mm carburetors, and an electric starter, producing a maximum power of 42.3 kW / 58 hp at 11,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 38 Nm at 9,500 rpm. The transmission had six speeds and the final drive was a chain. The bike had a hollow steel perimeter frame, 41 mm telescopic forks that were preload adjustable, and a link-type single shock rear suspension that was also rebound and preload adjustable. The front brakes had 2 discs with a 4-piston caliper, while the rear brakes had a single disc with a 2-piston caliper. The front tire was 120/70-17 while the rear tire was 160/60-17. The dimensions of the bike were 2116 mm in length, 719 mm in width, and with a wheelbase of 1430 mm. The seat height was 775 mm and dry weight was 186 kg. The fuel capacity was 17 Liters / 4.5 US gal / 3.7 Imp gal.
